EAC keeps lead; AU survives LPU

Defending champions Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals rolled to their third straight win against San Sebastian College Recolletos Golden Stags in straight sets, while Arellano University pulled through over Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates, in the continuing National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s volleyball action, Friday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

The Generals clinched their third win of the season, but not without a fight from the Stags in three tight sets, 25-28 25-23 25-22. EAC leaned on their close 9-attack advantage and 8 service aces to get the victory. The Generals’ skipper, Howard Mojica, who scored 19 points this time, had ample support from the troop. Fellow wing spikers Kerth Melliza and Israel Encina registered 10 and 8 markers, respectively. Richard Tolentino scored his usual double-digit production for SSC-R, with 16.

The scores:

EAC (3) – Mojica 19, Melliza 10, Doguna 8, Encina 8, Garcia 1, Bihag 1, Barbuco 1, Rasing 1, Cilocilo 0, Gorospe (L)

SSC-R (0) – Tolentino 16, Calonia 9, Ebrahim 5, Ronato 4, Lana 2, Ongque 0, Gervacio (L)

In the final game of the day, the Chiefs leaned on their postseason experience to subdue the improved Pirates in five thrilling sets, 22-25 25-23 17-25 25-20 15-8, to keep in step with the leaders with a 2-0 record. Arellano scored three more attack points and two more service aces to edge LPU, who relied on their defense to frustrate the former. Nevertheless, the towering Kenneth Aliyacyac had a breakout game with 22 points, 19 coming from kills, for Arelano. Three Chiefs produced 12 markers as Latip, Sarino, and Cabillan all helped to the cause. Joeward Presnede once againled the Pirates’ sail with 18 markers.
