Defense fuels UE in 43-29 stunner over Ateneo

The University of the East opened its UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball campaign on a rousing note as it pulled off a stunner over Ateneo de Manila University, 43-29 Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Defense propelled the Lady Warriors to pick up an opening day victory as their defense pestered the Lady Eagles all-game long.

Going on a zone defense to counter Ateneo’s height early, UE held down its opponents to a measly 7 first half points as it took a 21-7 edge.

Ateneo looked lost on offense, unable to find a way to counter UE’s pesky defense. The Lady Warriors complemented their defense with a lot of side to side movement on offense and high ball screens to allow penetrations to the basket.

Six unanswered points from the Recto crew to open the third canto gave the team its biggest margin at 28-7, before Ateneo finally showed semblance of progress on the offensive side.

Behind back to back triples by Janina Go late in the third period, the Loyola side pulled to within 19-30.

Go scored 8 in the 12-2 Ateneo rally, although UE answered with 9 more points bridging the third and fourth periods to put away their foes and book a morale-boosting win.

Ruthlaine Tacula and Eunique Chan each scored 11 points to lead the Lady Warriors.

The Lady Warriors controlled the rebounding battle, 51-40 including a 19-9 edge in offensive boards.

UE also forced 29 Ateneo turnovers with its hounding defense, and took away the inside game of the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles only scored 12 points inside the paint while bigs Danica Jose and Kristina Deacon were 1-for-9 from the field combined, limited to only 3 points.
