Many recognize the late Chino Trinidad for his dynamic presence as a sports commentator, his authoritative voice resonating through PBA games and the ringside of the boxing show “Blow-by-Blow.”
As commissioner of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), he shaped the landscape of amateur basketball in the Philippines.
Yet, before his illustrious career in sports broadcasting, Trinidad’s journey began in a different arena altogether – the swimming pool.
Long before he became a household name in Philippine sports, Chino was a varsity swimmer for the University of the Philippines (UP).
His affinity for the water mirrored his later passion for sports commentary – a dedication to excellence and a commitment to his craft.
Despite the whirlwind of his multifaceted life, Trinidad remained deeply connected to his roots in UP.
Maedel Lara, UP’s Outstanding Varsity Alumna awardee and Trinidad’s teammate, recalled his enduring impact on their team and community.
“He was well-loved… very friendly, kind, funny – he had the gift of gab even back then. As an alumnus, he was incredibly supportive of our events, despite his busy schedule,” Lara fondly reminisces.
“To us, he wasn’t a celebrity; he was just Chino – teammate, friend, and brother.”
Trinidad’s time as a varsity swimmer at UP laid the foundation for his later achievements in Philippine sports media.
His journey from the pool to the microphone exemplifies his unwavering dedication and passion, leaving an indelible mark on both the sports he loved and the people whose lives he touched.
