Capobres, Fabian step up as San Sebastian staves-off Perpetual

Even without team captain Michael Calisaan, the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags, behind stellar outings from Jerick Fabian and Alvin Capobres, were able to stave-off the foreign student-athlete less University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas, 80-70, Friday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The Perpetual Altas were without big men Prince Eze and Bright Akhuetie for the game as Eze sat out due to a fever while Akhuetie was preparing for Game 3 of the PCBL Finals for Mighty Sports.

However, Michael Calisaan figured in an unfortunate motorcycle accident last Sunday, May 22 that will cause him to miss more games in the 2016 FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup tournament. “‘Yun yung game namin kanina. For Michael and [Rhanzel] Yong. They need healing,” San Sebastian head coach Egay Macaraya said.

With the game still close entering the final frame, the Stags were able to limit their opponents to just four points in the first six minutes of the final quarter in a 12-4 rally. Fabian did most of the damage in knocking down long jumpers during the run while Capobres worked his way in the paint.

“Everybody stepped up. It’s a team effort talaga and everybody nagpapakita. Lahat ng ginagamit ko maganda ang pinapakita,” Macaraya said about the win.

Fabian finished the game with 20 points on 9-for-16 shooting while Capobres had 20 points as well on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 5-for-7 shooting from the stripe. Fabian grabbed six boards as well.

Perpetual, behind five straight points by Gab Dagangon, went on a 7-0 run with 1:43 left in the game. However, a missed triple by Dagangon with 31 ticks remaining spelled the end for the Altas.

Dagangon led the Altas with 16 points. AJ Coronel added 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks. However, their team committed 23 turnovers in the game and were outrebounded 47-35 that proved to be the difference in the game.

Both teams will play their final games on Friday, June 3. The Golden Stags (3-3) will face the UP Fighting Maroons at 3:00pm while the Altas (4-2) look to have their big men back as they face the CSB Blazers at 5:00pm.
