Calvin Abueva was rushed to the hospital after going down in pain during Magnolia’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup debut versus Blackwater, Thursday night.
The 36-year-old was stretchered out of the Ninoy Aquino Stadium and is being transported to the Manila Doctors’ Hospital as of this posting.
An extreme case of neck spasms prompted the Hotshots to send the veteran forward to the nearby hospital, according to the broadcast report.
Play was stopped with 7:19 left in the second quarter after Abueva absorbed an unintentional hit from Sedrick Barefield, sending him down to the floor.
Per replays, Barefield did not notice Abueva behind him when he tried to follow the ball’s direction, which went to Jerrick Ahamisi for a corner triple.
Usually quick to get back up on his feet, he could only lie on the ground while in pain. The league’s medical standby eventually brought in the stretcher.
Abueva left the game with two points and three rebounds against one personal foul in nearly six minutes of play.
