The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has confirmed discussions with Bennie Boatwright III regarding his potential role as a naturalized player in forthcoming FIBA competitions.
Despite currently showcasing his talents in China, Boatwright, the former USC Trojan, has expressed his ardent desire to reunite with Philippine basketball.
His affinity for the country has become palpable, fueling speculation of his return to the PBA fold once the league begins its import-laden conferences.
SBP has outlined its approach to maintaining a pool of naturalized players. It has cited the need for versatility and contingency planning within the national team setup.
Alongside Boatwright, the likes of Justin Brownlee and Angelo Kouame are earmarked as key components of this initiative, reflecting the federation’s commitment to depth and adaptability.
“The presence of a pool also ensures availability of naturalized players in case of injuries, scheduling issues, and other unforeseen incidents,” emphasized the SBP in a statement.
Boatwright’s youth, at just 27 years of age, bodes well for the long-term aspirations of the national team.
His inclusion aligns seamlessly with the SBP’s overarching objective of securing both present competitiveness and future sustainability.
