The Ateneo Lady Eagles fended off the NU Lady Bulldogs in their UAAP Season 78 Women’s Badminton Tournament tie held last September 27 in the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall. Ateneo won four matches with NU winning a consolation match courtesy of Jiselle Capillo.

Bianca Carlos of Ateneo easily won the first singles match against NU’s Loverly Magallano. Carlos dominated the match from the get-go, showing utter dominance in the two games. Magallano offered little resistance to Carlos who then won both games with scores of 21-6 and 21-5. The match was so one-sided that Carlos scored twelve straight points at the end of the first game and two runs of eight points each to win the second.

A three-game thriller was on display in the second singles match between ADMU’s Cassie Lim and NU’s Marinal Diansay. Lim won the first game in a routine fashion, scoring seven straight points in the end to win 21-12 over Diansay. However, Diansay was having none of it and came back with a score of 17-21 to win the second game. Fatigue was then evident for Diansay during the third game which Lim took advantage of, winning the third game 21-11.

ADMU’s Geva De Vera and Janel Dihiansan went up against NU’s Magallano and Amica Du-ay for the first doubles match of the tie. The match was a straightforward win for the Lady Eagles as the Lady Bulldogs just were unable to impose themselves in the two games. De Vera and Dihiansan didn’t let complacency creep in and remained composed to win the first game 21-17 and 21-13 for the second.

In the second doubles match, ADMU needed three games to ward off NU just like the corresponding singles bout. Carlos and Lim partnered each other for ADMU while Diansay and Capillo represented NU. Carlos and Lim made light work of their opponents in the first game, winning 21-8. Diansay and Capillo then answered back, scoring eight straight points to win the second game 13-21. The third game was a closer encounter compared to its predecessors but the Lady Eagles held on to win 21-16.

The last match in the tie was a singles match which composed of NU’s Capillo and ADMU’s Sam Santos. Both games were very much even contests with Capillo just shading it with her composure. Capillo was able to pull away from Santos, winning the first game 21-14. Santos then tried to win the second game, putting up a valiant effort only to succumb to Capillo who won 21-19.

Next up for the Lady Eagles will be UST while the Lady Bullbogs are going to face UP in the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall on October 3, 2015.
