Arellado carries FEU as Lady Tams end streak by downing UP

Precious Arellado served an all-around effort for Far Eastern University as the Lady Tamaraws ended their losing skid via a 46-38 victory over University of the Philippines Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Arellado led all scorers with 15 points and added 7 rebounds and 5 assists to her line to help the Lady Tamaraws end a four game losing streak and break into the winning column of the competition.

The Lady Maroons dropped to the cellar, still winless after five outings.

It was a nip-and-tuck battle right from the start, with both teams unable to attain a decisive edge until in the fourth period.

A jumper by Janeena Tatel followed by a drive from Joana Oliva gave the Lady Maroons a 30-27 lead early in the payoff period, before back to back triples by Loraine Ventura sparked an 8-2 run which gave the Lady Tams a 35-32 edge.

Oliva then split from the line, while Bea Daez followed it with an off-the-glass triple that gave UP back the advantage at 36-35.

The Lady Maroons however, struggled against the tight FEU defense, as they were never able to convert on another field goal fter that point.

Baskets by Precious Arellado and Clare Castro gave FEU back the 39-36 lead then Ventura sealed the deal with foul shots as the advantage ballooned to 45-36 with only spare change left.

FEU controlled the rebounding battle, 53-47, and made 8 more free throw attempts than UP as they got to the interior several times.

Tatel had 9 points and 17 rebounds for the Lady Maroons.
