Alex Eala exits pre-Wimbledon tilt

Alex Eala bowed out of the 2021 ITF J1 Roehampton tournament in the quarterfinals after a stunning loss to Czech Republic’s Linda Fruhirtova, 4-6, 1-6, in the Bank of England Sports Club in Roehampton, on Thursday.

The 16-year-old could not ace her two assignments of the day and received a shocking upset from the current juniors no. 14.

Fruhitova drew another Czech in the semifinals in qualifier Barbara Palicova, ensuring a player from this central European country will make the final of the warmup tournament for Wimbledon.

The other semifinals pairing is between world number 1 Victoria Kasintseva of Andorra and yet another Czech in unseeded Linda Klimovicova.

Eala earlier drew 14th seed Mara Guth of Germany and dominated in two sets, 6-4, 6-1, to set up the showdown with Fruhirtova in the last eight.

The Filipino standout looks to bounce back in the bigger dance as she is set to make her debut in the Wimbledon Championships.

The draw for the girls singles tournament is set to be released on July 3.
