After upsetting tournament favorite Malaysia, the Philippine Men’s Squash Team was hoping to end the Philippines’ somber 2017 Southeast Asian Games on a high note.
However, an equally-determined Singapore squad derailed their aspirations as the Filipino troika of Reymar Bergornia, Robert Garcia, and David Pelino fell 1-2 in the final, Tuesday evening at the National Squash Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
To start the best-of-three team match-up, Bergornia was overwhelmed by Pang Ka Hoe, 1-11, 3-11, 6-11.
Not wanting to waste this moment, Robert Garcia survived a thriller against Benedict Chan in four sets, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, to send the series into a winner-take-all.
However, Pelino was thoroughly outclassed by Samuel Kang, 4-11, 4-11, 5-11, to seal gold for the Singaporeans.
The women’s jumbo duo of Jemyca Aribado and Yvonne Alyssa Dalida also settled for silver earlier in the day after falling to Singapore as well.
