Coming off a stinging loss to Indonesia a little less than 12 hours ago, Perlas Pilipinas returned to the win column quickly as they lambasted Myanmar by 90, 123-33, Tuesday afternoon at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Philippines’ win, which might be the biggest winning margin in the biennial regional meet’s history, improves their card to 2-1.
Six cagers scored in double-digits with center Claire Castro leading the attack with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks. Cindy Resultay and Raiza Palmares-Dy each produced 15, while Afril Bernardino supplied 15 markers.
It was already a one-sided affair in favor of Perlas right in the first frame. With their hot shooting led by Bernardino’s 10 points, the Filipinas broke away wide and posted a 33-8 lead at the period’s end — more than enough to pin down Myanmar.
Not showing even the slightest of mercy, the Philippines kept on pounding the Burmese and posted the game’s widest gap at an overwhelming 92 points, 123-31, after Analyn Almazan’s perfect charities with 12 seconds left to play.
Janine Pontejos made 12 points for Perlas. Jack Animam had 10 points and seven boards. Almazan nearly had a double-double with eight points and 14 caroms, while France Cabinbin made her presence felt with nine boards and nine dimes.
No one from Myanmar scored over 10 markers in the loss. Thet Su Htwe and Yu Yu were their only scoring leaders with eight points apiece.
Perlas shot 56 percent from the floor. They also stamped their class in rebounds, 65-32. The Pinays also displayed top-notch defense, racking up 20 steals that helped force Myanmar to 31 turnovers. And, their bench walloped the Burmese’, 75-6.
The Filipinas’ next assignment will be Thailand tomorrow, Wednesday, August 23, at 8:15 PM.
