Matthew Wright left frustrated after Phoenix’s second straight loss

The Phoenix Fuel Masters were ambitious after starting their Governors’ Cup campaign on a high note with a 2-0 slate. And they were able to accomplish this without their ace Matthew Wright.

With Matthew Wright back in the fold, however, the Fuel Masters suffered two straight setbacks. And no one was more frustrated than Wright himself.

“Some poor executions down the stretch, that’s why we lost,” lamented the 26-year-old after their 91-95 loss to the league-leading NLEX Road Warriors at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

This could have been his bounce-back game after a dismal showing versus the Globalport Batang Pier last Wednesday, where he scored just four markers, going field goal-less for the third time in his young career. This time against NLEX, the Filipino-Canadian produced 17 markers.

But for the youthful Gilas cadet, who shot 6-of-14 versus NLEX and had a minus-2 plus-minus rating, discussing his individual performance is pointless.

“It doesn’t matter,” said the soft-spoken sharpshooter. “We lost the game. It doesn’t matter if I score 15. I just wanna win the game.

“It’s frustrating when you’re team’s losing.”

With the FIBA Asia Cup just days away, all Wright wants is to give his club team a win before he embarks to Lebanon.
