It’s become a familiar sight; Alyssa Valdez standing in the middle of the V-League court clutching flowers and trophies while being flanked by league officials. The proud Batangueña has really long arms, but she still has trouble hugging the large bouquets and trophies.
She’s had a lot of practice accepting awards, but Valdez still has that look of whimsy and reluctance every time she’s recognized.
Earlier today, Valdez became the most decorated player in V-League history, having earned her fourth MVP plum. This Reinforced Conference saw Valdez take her game to a different level as she led the upstart Creamline Cool Smashers to third place.
Valdez’s four MVPs came while she played with different teams. Every trophy represents different phases in her career.
She first won the award while playing for the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles back in 2015. Her next came at the height of her prowess with the PLDT Home Ultera Ultra Fast Spikers.
Then, she started the post-Ateneo phase of her career when she won one with the Bureau of Customs Transformers.
With Creamline, Valdez is already a grizzled veteran exposed to the heights of volleyball in Thailand. At this point in her life, the 23-year old has realized the importance of constant improvement and never staying stagnant.
“‘Pag ganito, lalo mo kailangan i-push ang sarili mo at hindi mag-stop to improve yourself. Yung awards, it’s a reminder na you can’t stop sa mga ginagawa mo, the you need to pursue, still try, push yourself to the limit.
“Kung nakakakuha ka ng award, meron pang kailangan at ma-pupush as an athlete,” Valdez shared while holding back tears.
Valdez also recognizes her fans and supporters who have been with her no matter where she plays.
“I think this is the very first na out of college na talaga ako. After everything, after Thailand, medyo matanda na nga,” the 5-foot-9 spiker, who was the guest player of 3BB Nakornnont early this year.
“It’s really worth, kaya din different kasi the management the supporters are still there no matter what. Ilang beses na ako nagpalit palit ng team pero nandito pa rin silang lahat. This is for them also and for my family.”
Regarding constantly searching for the next challenge, Valdez has her eyes set on another stint with the Philippine Team. Tomorrow, the Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas Inc. is slated to announce the final cut for the team that will represent the Philippines in the AVC Seniors Women’s Championship and the Southeast Asian Games.
“After this, focus tayo sa national team.
“Two months na lang. I hope na lahat makapagsupport sa national team and were really hoping na aganda ang journey natin sa national team. Sabi nga nila, if its just the beginning, ituloy-tuloy na natin yung program sa Philippine volleyball,” the proud daughter of San Juan, Batangas declared.
