Joe Devance does not have to do it, but he wants to — even on his birthday
It’s been well-documented how Joe Devance has literally inspired the entire Barangay with the physical sacrifices he made for the Ginebra during the on-going semifinals.
Devance, who has a fear of needles, has been getting anesthetic shots for the torn plantar fascia on his left foot since Game Three of the series just so he can provide what coach Tim Cone and the Gin Kings need. But with their backs against the wall, and as eerie as it sounds, Devance, who is celebrating his 35th birthday, received a present: a double dosage of anesthetic shots.
“I took the first shot at around 5:30pm I think? And I went out there and it did not feel right. It was still painful, likeon the arc [of his foot]. I just came in, four minutes until the game started. I told the doctor I need one more shot because it’s not… I still feel pain. I couldn’t push off it at all,” Devance shared.
“We came in right before the game. Just did it really quick, it was still bleeding. I wish I could show you guys how nasty. I’ll post it on IG. But uhm… So I had to take two shots before the game.”

But having two shots of pain-relievers had a polar effect on the 6-foot-7 Filipino-American.
“It’s funny though in the first half, my foot was numb. My whole foot was numb. I felt like I was just running on my ankles. I felt like I didn’t have no foot,” the 10-year league veteran furthered.
During that frame, Ginebra had just rallied back from a slow start, figuring in a back-and-forth affair with Star. After a poor 20-9 start, the Gin Kings stayed composed to eventually find their rhythm. The same was the case for Devance, as he figured out how he could work around the numbness he had felt on the bench.
“I kinda adjusted to that feeling and once I did that I felt better. My foot was a little bit hurting on the inside, in the arc, but in the second half I just told myself that I gotta battle through that,” said Devance, who played his series-high of 19 minutes during Game Six.
And once he was able to fine-tune himself, the native of Honolulu, Hawaii heated up. And boy did he ever, as he was unstoppable during the third canto, going 6-of-7 from the field and scoring all 14 of his points during the quarter.
The aggression he showed on offense was actually planned all along.
“Yesterday I made sure that I really got some shots up in practice. Because the previous day I kinda just sat out because I wanted to rest my foot. But yesterday I just told myself I’m gonna shoot. It doesn’t matter.
“So today I had a little bit more rhythm. Luckily I did, and we got the win,” said the seven-time PBA champion after Ginebra’s 91-67 win.
The birthday boy, though, continues to have no regrets as the long-term effects of what he is doing remain a question. What matters for him is the present and the opportunity of having one more chance to head into another Finals.
“Honestly, guys, I’m super blessed to be in this position. We fought hard to be here. I’m truly thankful,” he said.
“If it takes me a hundred shots to make the championship, to get to the finals, I’mma get a hundred shots. I’d worry about my foot later.”
Though he might not be celebrating his birthday like he used to, Devance is at peace knowing that they live to fight another day.
