After figuring in two close games, the National University Lady Bulldogs vented their frustrations on the suddenly-struggling Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles, taking a 6-0 shutout, Monday morning at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
“Na-inspired siguro yung team namin the last two games namin na parehong dikitan. Na-motivate sila, pinaghugutan nila yung last game nila from UE,” second-year NU Lady Bulldogs head coach Egay delos Reyes said as NU went 1-1 in their last two games that reached extra innings.
“Ito talaga very big step para sa amin to excel more. Dito lumabas yung natural game namin. Hindi naman sa pagyayabang but this is our game. We made some changes sa mechanics nila and they are adopting to our system in year two,” he furthered.
Second-year pitcher Mary Ann Ramos sat out of this game but Rina Vailoces (1-0) and Mia Macapagal were on-point, holding Ateneo to just one hit for the entire course of the game. Both pitchers had two strikeouts as well as Ateneo could only reach base due to walks.
With the pitchers doing their work, it was just a matter of time before the offense followed. Colleen Alilin and Dyan Arago heated up late to power the Lady Bulldogs offense. The former went 3-of-3 at-bat while Arago had two RBI’s, helping secure the sixth inning stoppage against Ateneo rookie Kevyn Lacson (0-2)
Even with a 3-1 slate, Delos Reyes said that his system has yet to be fully grasped by his team.
“Siguro sa ngayon, mga 60 to 70 percent pa lang but, hopefully, by the end of the season, kung hindi man 100, 90 percent na. Malaking bagay iyon,” he added.
NU will break its tie at the second spot on Thursday, February 16 when they face the UST Tiger Softbelles at 11:30am. Ateneo (0-5) play their final game of the round on the same day, facing UE at 8:00am.
