Batiller on 0-4 start: ‘Sarili namin ang kalaban namin’

The University of the East Red Warriors are on their worst start ever since veteran head coach Derrick Pumaren took over the program three years ago.

The Red Warriors have lost by an average of 4.7 points per game, falling apart in the final frame all four times. The cagers from Recto Avenue and their community have been left scratching their heads, as the UE faithful had been optimistic of the team’s Season 79 Final Four chances during the summer.

Wednesday afternoon was probably the worst loss the team absorbed this season, crumbling in the fourth quarter against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons to stay listless.

With the game tied at 69-all, the Red Warriors surrendered points to Jett Manuel while failing to create open looks, resulting in a 75-71 loss.

“Di ko nga alam e. Di lang naman mga huling tira namin,” a confused second year utility guard Bonbon Batiller shared after the game. “Sobrang down kami pero sabi ni coach kailangan lang lumaban kami.”

According to the General Santos City native, even their mentor is now questioning the lack of patience and confidence their team has right now.

“Parang wala kaming kumpiyansa sa sarili namin. Alam nilang hindi yun yung laro namin,” the 22-year-old rued. “Wala kaming kumpiyansa sa loob ng court.”

“Parang sarili lang namin kalaban namin.”

Moreover, Batiller saw no positives to take away from the losses they have experienced.

“Wala ngang positive e.

“Yung depensa lang namin consistent, opensa wala talaga e,” Batiller, who is averaging 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, lamented.

Even with this ordeal, he remains hopeful that he and the Red Warriors can turn things around.

“Kailangan namin lumaban talaga simula next game, di na kami puwede matalo.

“I-pupush namin mga sarili namin,” he promised.
