Taconing drops decision to WBC world champ Lopez

Filipino light flyweight Jonathan Taconing failed to dethrone Mexican world champion Ganigan Lopez in their bout Sunday morning in Mexico City, Mexico.

Taconing struggled to establish his offense against the more accurate Lopez, who had captured the WBC belt from Yu Kimura of Japan last March. The Mexican capitalized on the 29-year-old southpaw’s predictability using his jabs.

After being dominated by the champion early in the fight, the Elorde Boxing pugilist found an opening in one of Lopez’ combinations, landing a stiff left straight that rocked the champion. However, it was only momentary, and Lopez continued to outbox the challenger en route to a 115-112, 118-109, and 119-108 decision win to retain the belt.

The loss snaps Taconing’s nine fight win streak and drops his record to 22-3-1. On the other hand, Lopez improves his record to 28-6.
