Daquis on PSL All Stars team: ‘We’re competitive’

We’re less than a day away from the Thai-Denmark Super League women’s volleyball tournament, and the Petron-Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Star squad is all prepped and ready to compete with some of the best teams in South East Asia.

Bannered by some of the best volleybelles in the Philippines like Jeanette Panaga, Cha Cruz, Aiza Pontillas, and Jen Reyes, the Petron-PSL team is sure to showcase many exciting games.

Leading the team is team captain Rachel Anne Daquis. A veteran of international competition, she hopes she is able to pass on her experience to the younger players in the team.

“Siyempre it’s a responsibility. So kelangan mag step-up ako as an ate sa court at outside sa court. Gusto ko maging role model sa kanila. Yung experience ko sa international arena, gusto ko mashare sa kanila kung paano i-handle at maglaro. Susuportahan ko sila.”

Daquis also shared with Tiebreaker Times how she remembers being one of the younger players in previous international tournaments.

“Ngayon maraming fresh faces. Yung last kong pinaglalaruan ako yung bata, ngayon ako yung ate naman. Alam kong magiging maganda yung laban namin.”

Despite the loaded PSL team, the tournament will still be an uphill battle, but Daquis promises that the team formed will be able to compete against the foreign teams.

“We’re competitive. Professional players naman ito sa Philippines. Magandang team toh kasi maraming bagong mukha. Advantage siguro kasi di pa basa yung mga laro nila. Magandang experience to para sa players from the Philippines.”

The Petron-PSL team open the tournament against Bangkok Glass tomorrow at the MCC Hall in Bangkok, Thailand.
