Archrivals San Beda College and Colegio de San Juan de Letran picked up wins against Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals and Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers respectively, at the ongoing NCAA men’s volleyball eliminations, Monday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
After going toe-to-toe against defending champions Emilio Aguinaldo College and losing in their opening game, San Beda rolled on to their second consecutive victory. The Red Spikers upended Mapua in four sets, 30-28 24-26 25-21 25-23. San Beda skipper Alfie Mascariñas and Mark Enciso combined for 30 points to lead their squad, which had 60 attacks against 54 for the Cardinals. Philip Bagalay had 17 markers for Mapua, 15 coming from attacks. Paul Cuzon led the charge at the net with 2 of the Cardinal’s 9 blocks, and a total of 16 markers.

In the day’s opening game, Harold Reyes and the Letran Knights picked up their first win of the season in straight sets against JRU. The tournament hosts diffused the Bombers, 28-26 25-17 25-23. It was a tight affair with no team totally dominating the match. Letran had the advantage in the attacks and blocks (36-31 and 5-2) against a relatively smaller JRU lineup. Nevertheless, it was the errors of the Heavy Bombers in the crucial moments that spelled their doom. Reyes had 13 points to pace the Knights, with Bobby Gatdula and Jov Hernandez both contributing 8 markers. Larry Sioco Jr. was the only Bomber in double figures with 10.
