After a hotly-contested first half, the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles would capitalize on poor shooting from the University of the East Lady Warriors in the third and fourth quarters and hold the host school to a dismal thirteen points in the second half and take home a 50-35 win, their third of the season.
The Lady Eagles and the Lady Warriors traded baskets and leads for most of the first half, with both working through poor shooting. Leading 27-22 heading into the third quarter, the Lady Eagles would take advantage of a UE cold spell that saw UE shooters Love Joy Sto. Domingo and Ruthlaine Tacula failing to find the easy basket, even when shooting from their favorite spots on the court. Danica Jose would also come in big for the Lady Eagles, dominating the paint to help Ateneo outrebound UE, 55-50 and making inside scoring a difficult task for the Lady Warriors. Though Ateneo would only score ten points in the third quarter, they would UE to a dismal four points in the quarter and take a 37-26 lead heading into the final period.
Though poor shooting would continue to plague both teams, Ateneo could only expand their lead, with Danica Jose continuing to dominate the paint for the easy inside basket. UE could only churn out nine points in the final period, with their usual scorers failing to find their touch in the quarter. Ateneo’s lead would only expand in the final minutes.
Danica Jose had 18 points, 18 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal for Ateneo. Ruthlaine Tacula led the UE scoring with 7 points along with 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block. The Lady Eagles put an end to a four-game losing streak and now climb to 3-4 going into the second round, while the Lady Warriors sink to 2-5.
