Red Spikers shrug off slow start, sweep Heavy Bombers

Despite a very rough first set, the San Beda College Red Spikers was off to a hot start.

The title favorites from Mendiola fended off a first-set scare and crushed the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 27-25, 25-11, 25-10, to open their campaign, Friday afternoon at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Opposite hitter Mark Enciso showed that he is still San Beda’s main threat after scoring 10 attacks and three blocks for 13 points. Adrian Viray added nine points in just two sets of play.

Seasoned head coach Nes Pamilar did not let that shaky opening frame pass by without telling his wards a few words.

“Lahat ng kalaban respetuhin natin. Maglaro tayo ng maayos,” the veteran tactician told the team.

Fortunately, the last year’s semifinalists responded with conviction and dominated the Mandaluyong boys.

PJ Sulivas paced the Bombers with eight points, two coming off serves.
