Koy Banal applies for UE head coaching job

A decorated tactician has just thrown his name in the pool for the vacant position of head coach of the University of the East Red Warriors

Current Marinerong Pilipino head coach Koy Banal disclosed that he has already submitted his resume to the athletics department of UE, signifying his intention to take over the post left by Derrick Pumaren last November.

“I’ve submitted my application to them,” he said.

Banal is well-regarded in the collegiate basketball scene as he has won numerous titles in both the UAAP and the NCAA.

From 2000-04, he steered the FEU Tamaraws to two UAAP championship. He then led the San Beda Red Lions to the top of the NCAA in 2006.

His last collegiate stint was with the Arellano Chiefs from 2011 to 2013.

Though the UE Men’s Basketball program has long been suffering, 31 years to be exact, Banal, if ever he gets the job, plans to re-create the same magic he did during his stint with San Beda College.

“UE is on a 31-year title drought. I’ve done it with San Beda after a 28-year drought,” the soft spoken tactician said.

Moreover, he is planning to bring his brother Joel on board as well as team consultant.

“Joel broke the 14-year drought for Ateneo who will be my consultant if we’ll be given the chance,” Banal added.

“We know what to do and how to do it.”

Banal will have a head start compared to the rest of the other applicants as he is set to coach UE scoring sensation Alvin Pasaol in the PBA D-League.
