Mikee Romero vows end to long-standing PBA impasse

Outgoing PBA chairman Mikee Romero is departing in style

As he gracedd the 24th PBA Press Corps Awards on Thursday night at the Gloria Maris Restaurant in Cubao, the 45-year-old entrepreneur vowed that the impasse due to the power struggle in the Commissioner’s Office will find its end sooner.

“We will fix everything by next week,” the Globalport Batang Pier owner in his speech during the annual awards night — a rare public appearance for him.

“Rest assured, the PBA will open on December 17.

The board room war between the Renegade Seven — headed by the MVP-owned franchises — and the five-team bloc led by the San Miguel teams had sparked last November 2, but a resolution regarding under-fire Chito Narvasa’s term has yet to be made.

The indifference between the team owners and governors stemmed from the controversial approval by Chito Narvasa of the trade that sent the first overall pick in the 2017 PBA Draft owned by the KIA Picanto to the San Miguel Beermen.

“Like a normal family, may konting problema,” Romero shared of this standoff.

“Like a normal human being, mga passionate manalo ‘tong mga teams na ‘to, pati yung team ko, kaya umaabot lang sa ganito.”

Even a five-day trip to Los Angeles, California last November 10 failed to resolve the power struggle.

But despite that, Romero assured that Asia’s first pro-league will resume business on December 17 for its 43rd season.

“I don’t want to elaborate anymore (on) what’s happening behind the scenes, but ang masasabi ko lang, sa December 17, malaking opening ang gagawin ng PBA,” said Romero.

“The PBA will be, as scheduled, business as usual.”
