University of San Jose – Recoletos head coach Leode Garcia did not mince his words on the shame the Siquijor Mystics brought to his hometown after their preposterous game it figured in against the ARQ Builders-Lapu Lapu Heroes in the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup last Wednesday.
The Mystics not only disgraced the game of basketball but also brought Siquijor to bad light.
“You are a shame to my hometown. Kung sino man ang nag utos sa inyo, mas bobo pa sa inyo. Big stupid people!” Garcia’s Facebook post read in Bisaya.
“Sinira nyo ang magandang imahe ng isla naming Siquijor.”
Farcical was the outing of the Mystics who were coming off a huge win four days prior and had ample rest before returning to the floor of the Alcantara Civic Center.
In the game that only lasted for 20 minutes before it was halted by league officials and the Games and Amusements Board, the Mystics shot just 5-of-21 from the field and a horrid 0-of-10 from the stripe to score just five points in the opening frame and eight in the second stanza.
Moreover, they committed a mind-boggling 14 fouls.
After a thorough investigation by the league, the entire Mystics team was handed lifetime bans by the league. GAB is also looking to revoke the licenses of everyone involved.
Garcia, a former player of Metropolitan Basketball Association team Cebu Gems, hopes it pushes through so that a future Siquijor team can rightly replace them one day.
“Sana ma-ban kayo, hindi madamay ang pangalan ng team para may chance pa kami na mag-rebuild na hindi dinidiktahan o nilalaro ng mga bumaboy sa basketball.”
In the end, Siquijor’s name has also been tarnished by the team. And according to Garcia, they are paying for the sins of a select few.
“Biktima kami sa mga ganitong klase ng tao.”
