United City will have to go through the champions of Korea, Thailand, and Australia in the 2022 AFC Champions League.
The 2020 Philippines Football League champions have been slotted with Korean FA Cup champion Jeonnam, Thai League 1 kings BG Pathum United, and A-League Men rulers Melbourne City to form Group G of the continent’s premier club football tournament.
United City will be competing for the first time since the 2021 edition of the tournament. There, they finished third place in Group I following a one-win, four-loss, and one-draw slate.
The soon-to-be New Clark City-based club missed the country’s domestic cup tournament.
United City has a tough draw in the tournament that will take place from April 7-February 26. All three clubs they are facing are in the midst of competition.
The Dragons of Jeonnam, who qualified by winning the Cup tournament of Korea, will begin its K2 campaign on February 26.
BG Pathum, meanwhile, currently sits in fifth in the table with 29 points. Then Melbourne is in fourth with 10 in the A-League.
This will be United City’s fifth appearance in the ACL.
Copa Paulino Alcantara winner Kaya-Iloilo will have to go through the preliminary round.
They will face a team from Australia on March 8. The winner will advance to take on China’s Changchun Yatai on March 15.
