SMART CLARK GIGA CITY — Make it 3,000 career assists for LA Tenorio.
The decorated floor general reached that mark during the second quarter of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel’s 2020 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal meeting with Rain or Shine, Friday night.
He achieved the feat following his feed to Japeth Aguilar with 3:55 remaining prior to the halftime break. Aguilar’s shot then made it a 36-33 lead for the Gin Kings.
That was Tenorio’s fourth assist in the game.
According to the league’s stats chief Fidel Mangonon III, Tenorio is the 11th player to have that many in league history. However, he’s only second among active players after San Miguel point guard Alex Cabagnot.
The 36-year-old is now 85 assists away from tying all-time great and current Gin Kings assistant coach Olsen Racela in the 10th spot. The legendary Sen. Robert Jaworski tops the list with 5,825.
Tenorio was among the late-comers in the bubble following a laparoscopic appendectomy two weeks prior to the season restart. Still, he never missed a game, keeping his Ironman streak very much alive.
And in the tail-end of the Barangay’s elimination round stint, the Batangueno cager showed that he’s regaining his old form. He was averaging 6.6 points, 4.2 assists, and 2.2 rebounds prior to the playoffs.
Tenorio reaching the milestone came exactly seven days after Aguilar collected his 600th career block. That feat came when the Gin Kings battled fellow title favorite TNT, which helped clinch the top seed.
