The famed dribble-drive motion offense is the system currently implemented by the Men’s National basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, and the reigning UAAP Champions, Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
The developer of the dribble drive motion-style is here in Manila, as former Sacramento King assistant coach Vance Walberg will hold a two-day clinic about the intricacies of the offense in an event organized by current Phoenix Fuel Master head coach Ariel Vanguardia and Hoop Coaches International.
Walberg will break down drills, share important teaching points, and introduce his latest addition to the famed system, while also teaching how to counter the offense as well.
“What we are trying to do is get the best percentage shots in basketball,” Walberg said, Wednesday afternoon in a press conference held at Gerry’s Grill in Greenhills, San Juan City. “The most basic analytic is to get to the basket, get open threes, or get to the foul line. That’s what the dribble drive is all about: getting the best shots.”
The former NBA assistant coach shared that he had been fascinated when one of his colleagues with the Kings notified him that the Philippine national team has been implementing the system he developed. “I did not know about it until one of my assistant coaches with the [Sacramento] Kings told me that your national team has been doing it,” he shared. “I have not had the opportunity to watch it yet [though].”
One of the fortunate coaches to be regarded personally by Walberg himself is incoming Phoenix Fuel Master head coach Arial Vanguardia. “We had three days with Coach Vance and we have been working hard on adjusting to his system,” the ABL champion coach shared. “The important thing is that we are trying to absorb the system slowly and try to master it. Right now, everybody is starting from zero here in Phoenix but we’ll try to get everything that we can learn from coach Vance.”
Just like Vanguardia, coaches and players alike can have a first-hand experience of learning from Coach Walberg himself this weekend, June 18 and 19,at the Kerry Sports Arena in Taguig City.
“I’m excited to interact and impart my experience with local coaches in the Philippines,” the American coach said. “This is my first trip in the Philippines and I’m hoping it would be the first of many.”
“Like any coach, we all strive to be better,” Vanguardia added. “This event is part of the continuous learning process and an opportunity to share notes with other coaches.”
Registration to the clinic that is endorsed by the Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines is PHP 5,000 on or before June 17, while sign-ups during the day itself will be priced at PHP 6,000.
“Iba pa rin if the creator of it is the one who teaches. It goes beyond the books and will be a great learning experience,” Oliver Gan of Hoop Coaches International concluded.
