Unlike their dominant run in MPL Philippines Season 14, ONIC Philippines has faced a less convincing start to the season.
With a 5-3 record, the team is still in the process of finding its rhythm.
In a conversation with Borris “Brusko” Parro, the team’s roamer, he shared that one of the main challenges for the “Super Family” this season has been how their rivals have adjusted to play a style similar to their own.
“Siguro ngayong season ano, dahil siguro, nag-champion kami sa M6, MPL, siguro nasa isip namin parang ano eh, samin naka-mata lahat ng team. So pinagdadaan kami or inaaral yung galaw namin, parang inaadapt rin yung ginagawa namin sa in-game,” said Brusko.
However, he also revealed that internal issues within the team have hindered them from fully showcasing the potential they displayed in both MPL PH Season 14 and the M6 World Championship just a few months ago.
“Ang mali lang namin siguro, parang nagiging relax kami this season, ganun. Yun yung mali din namin na napag-usapan naman namin na kailangan padin ibalik yung gigil kasi kulang pa yung achievement namin,” he emphasized.
Currently on a three-game win streak, ONIC Philippines seems to have overcome these challenges as they head into the second half of the season with renewed energy — something that was lacking in the past few weeks.
Brusko acknowledged that the team’s losses to Aurora, Team Liquid, and Team Falcons served as a wake-up call, reigniting their hunger to win and reminding them of the drive that led them to claim the MPL title last season.
“Siguro ano, hindi naman kami nado-down kapag natatalo, siguro yung tatlong talo namin parang naging lesson yun sa’min na kailangan talaga namin bumawi, kailangan namin ma-feel ulit yung gigil parang last season,” he explained.
This hunger was born out of the team’s collective struggles before joining ONIC Philippines.
“Last season, lahat naman kami, siguro apat kami galing sa, puro first round exit ta’s laglag ganun, parang gigil kami manalo talaga na hindi namin iniisip manalo, parang nag-enjoy lang kami sa every game namin.”
For Brusko, ONIC has become a refuge, a place that helped him leave behind the negativity and backlash he experienced during his one season with RRQ Hoshi Indonesia. There, alongside Darry “Irrad” Abarquez, RRQ was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Geek Fam Indonesia in a hard-fought five-game series.
Now with ONIC, Brusko uses the criticism and hatred he received from Indonesian fans as motivation to prove his doubters wrong and excel in his role.
“Dami kasing ano sa’kin nun eh, parang nag-babash nung nasa RRQ. Siguro yun din yung isa sa nag-motivate sa’kin na papatunayan ko na mali sila ganun,” he shared.
“Nung pumasok ako ng ONIC, pangako ko sa sarili ko yun eh na babawi ako dito, parang ipapakita ko sakanila na mali yung mga sinasabi nila.”
