Cignal extends streak to five, snaps Wangs’ run


The Cignal HD Hawkeyes went on a hot streak early and decimated the Wangs Basketball Couriers, 94-69, to continue their five-game winning streak, Thursday afternoon at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Jason Perkins and Oping Sumalinog orchestrated the Hawkeyes’ scorching 26-5 opener, as the duo combined for 20 of the team’s 32 points in the first quarter and led by as high as 34 to bag their sixth win with ease.

“Credit to my starters. Nag-step up sila on defense and that’s why we got to that big lead early,” noted coach Boyet Fernandez, as Cignal stayed at fourth place with its 6-2 card.

Perkins unloaded 12 of his 24 points in the first quarter, while also contributing five rebounds, and two blocks. Sumalinog, meanwhile, pumped eight of his 15 markers in the opening frame, to go with five boards and two swats.

Pamboy Raymundo also scattered 18 points, four assists, two rebounds, and two steals. Raymar Jose buckled down in the paint as he got eight markers, 12 boards, three assists, and three steals.

Following another dominant victory, Fernandez is hoping to see consistency from his wards in the Hawkeyes’ last two games.

“Kahit na up and down kami, I want to see that our system is always there,” he said.

John Ambulodto topped Wangs with 19 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks, while Ryan Arambulo got 14 markers and three boards, as the Couriers’ usual suspects were silenced by the choking Cignal defense.

Wangs also saw its two-game winning streak cut short and fall to an even 3-3 slate.

Cignal will have a week-long break before facing Team Batangas on Thursday, July 6, at 3:00pm. Wangs, on the other hand, look to regain their form when they face the Zark’s Jawbreakers on Monday, July 3, at 3:00pm.
