Rebisco-PSL Manila wins a set but still falls to VietinBank

After going through a tough clinic yesterday, Rebisco-PSL Manila put up a better showing in their second game but still could not handle Vietnamese club VietinBank, falling in four sets, 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 14-25, in the 2017 AVC Asian Women’s Club Championship in Kazakhstan.

Against Hisamitsu Springs, Rebisco never took the lead. This time, the Filipinas were rejuvenated in the opening of the match against VietinBank, sprinting to a 9-4 lead in the first set. But troubled service reception haunted the Rebisco and allowed VietinBank to crawl back, tie the set at 18, and go on a late 4-1 rally to take the set.

Anchored on offense from Aby Maraño, Jaja Santiago, and Jovelyn Gonzaga, Rebisco regained some of their opening magic in the second set. A Maraño single block pushed Rebisco to a decisive 17-11 lead, giving Rebisco enough cushion to tie the match at a set apiece.

From there, the Vietnamese adjusted their attack and service targets. Consecutive aces buoyed Vietin Bank to a 17-12 third-set advantage. While the PSL All-Stars made a last-ditch run, coming within three, 19-16, Vietin Bank had too much offensive juice for their defense to withstand.

By the fourth set, Rebisco tapped out, allowing Vietin Bank to grow their 11-14 lead all the way to 11-21, putting the result out of doubt.

Jaja Santiago paced the Philippine-side anew with 17 points, 15 coming from attacks. Gonzaga and Maraño added 10 markers each.

Fajardo had 48 excellent sets in the match.

Rebisco-PSL slide to 0-2 in the group phase and play their last match of the round tomorrow against Chinese club Tianjin Bank.
