League-leading Cignal-San Beda hands JRU 44-point loss

The Cignal-San Beda HD Hawkeyes inched closer to snagging a top two spot as they demolished the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 94-50, Thursday evening at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Robert Bolick led the Hawkeyes with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block as they racked their seventh straight win and improve to a 7-1 card.

Ben Adamos also chipped in 11 markers and two boards, while Andreas Cahilig also had 11 points and four rebounds.

“We’re very happy with the way we played today. We stuck with our game plan and we were able to limit [Tey] Teodoro and [Paolo] Pontejos,” said coach Boyet Fernandez.

Both JRU gunners were stymied to just six points in the game, with Pontejos exiting midway in the second quarter due to a left foot sprain.

Cignal established dominance early, taking a 28-13 edge after the first frame and continued to pound on the Heavy Bombers to grab a lead as high as 48, 94-46, late in the payoff period courtesy of a Calvin Oftana fastbreak.

The HD Hawkeyes shot 48 percent from the field, including 9-of-29 from distance, compared to a horrible 27 percent for Vergel Meneses’ squad. Moreover, the uber-deep Cignal-San Beda bench scored 65 points in the game.

Abdoul Poutouochi was the lone bright spot for JRU (3-4) with 10 points and seven rebounds.

In their next outing, Cignal-San Beda takes on the Racal Tile Masters in a battle of D-League heavyweights on Monday, March 13, at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao, Quezon City. The JRU Heavy Bombers, on the other hand, look to move past this loss as they face the Wangs Basketball Couriers on Tuesday, March 7, at the same venue.
