One shining moment:
During the UAAP season, there has been a lot of amazing moments for the NU Bulldogs squad. There’s locking down the Adamson Soaring Falcons to just 25 points for ONE ENTIRE GAME, Alfred Aroga’s 8 blocks against the Ateneo Blue Eagles, and of course, winning the UAAP Championship.
But if there’s one moment that stood out for the NU Bulldogs, it was Game 2 of the UAAP Finals. The NU Bulldogs had yet to beat the FEU Tamaraws prior to that game. They were 0-3 against them including a back-to-back loss to end the first round and to start the second round. The Bulldogs, arguably having the best analytical coaching staff in college basketball, came well prepared in game 2. With their backs against the wall, the NU players responded and won the game in a huge blowout 62-47 to force a game 3. Then, as they say, everything is history.
Who’s in, who’s out
Even though almost all of the NU Bulldogs players play for the PBA D-League, majority with the MJM Builders squad, the school will be sending an intact line-up to the tournament. Even 5th year players Troy Rosario, Glenn Khobuntin, and Henry Betayene will don the Blue and Gold for the last time in this tournament.
Player to watch
Troy Rosario will still get his numbers in this tournament but for us, the player to watch for the NU Bulldogs is
Alfred Aroga
Unlike the UAAP, all of the big men the young Aroga will be facing in the PCCL are the elite of the elite. There will be no breaks for Aroga with a showdown against the 6’11 Jean Marie Mpouma for UV, then face-off against Landry Sanjo of SWU the next day. Then, when the team gets back to Manila, Aroga has to bang bodies with, arguably a top 3 center in collegiate basketball, Ola Adeogun. In capping-off the tournament, Aroga will welcome FEU rookie Prince Orizu. Ahhh the life of a center.
Prediction
Out of all the 8 schools participating in the PCCL, NU has the toughest schedule. The only easy outing will be against the University of Visayas Green Lancers on November 15. They play the CESAFI Champions SWU on November 16 then play the NCAA Champions SBC and UAAP runners-up FEU in back-to-back days. It would be hard for NU to dominate the tournament especially in this format. Nonetheless, we still think that with the discipline of the team on defense, they will be able to grind out the Elite Eight Round and head to the finals.
