Cruise-control Lady Stags overwhelm Lady Bombers

With the holiday break in sight, the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags stuffed Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers stockings with spikes, blocks, and aces en route en route to a dominant 25-10, 25-13, 25-23 win to remain undefeated in the NCAA Season 92 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The ladies from Recto poured in consistent, targeted serves that easily rattled JRU’s passing in the first two sets. The third set, however, took a slight turn for the worse as it was the Lady Stags who struggled.

With mostly bench players on the court, San Sebastian fell in a 4-15 hole. The bleeding stopped when reigning MVP Grethcel Soltones came back in the match. Soltones wound up scoring eight points in the late stretch, slowly bringing her team back to the lead. With JRU still in the lead late, 22-21, the SVL Open Conference MVP scored thrice to help close the match.

“Ang sinasabi ko sa kanila (bench players) ‘yung third set para sa kanila talaga. Kaya naman namin kahit wala si Grethcel, sila lang talaga ‘yung ayaw kumilos. Hindi naman kasing iilang players lang ang bumubuhay sa amin, kailangan lahat nakaka-contribute,” stressed Lady Stags head coach Roger Gorayeb.

Soltones managed a cool 17 points off 16 spikes and a block. Nikka Dalisay added 12 markers.

The Lady Stags head into the holiday vacation with a 6-0 record and solo share of the top seed.

They return to action on January 11 when they face the University of Perpetual Help System – Dalta Lady Altas.

Rosalie Pepito topped the Lady Bombers with 11 points while Shola Alvarez tallied eight.
