RC Cola-Army claims pivotal bout against slumping Cignal

The RC Cola-Army Lady Troopers regained valuable footing in a tight race for seeding in the 2016 Philippine Superliga Grand Prix after scrambling the Cignal HD Spikers 25-13, 25-15, 25-10 at the Imus Sports Arena in Imus City, Cavite.

With both teams struggling at the bottom half of the standings, the “aging” Lady Troopers showed their might on the depleted HD Spikers. Army served hard and long, challenging Army’s weak reception.

The HD Spikers had just 18 spikes, zero blocks, and four aces while Army’s offense flourished with 41 kills, five blocks, and nine aces.

“Maganda talaga ang tinakbo ng team ngayon. Kita niyo naman na, at least, paunti-unti ‘yung pickup nila sa gusto naming gawin. Nakakakuha na rin kami ng production sa imports namin which is crucial. Hopefully, tuloy-tuloy na ‘to para sa amin,” said Army head coach Kungfu Reyes.

Army’s National Team stalwart Jovelyn Gonzaga poured in a game-high 16 points while Royse Tubino tacked on nine markers to lead a balanced Army attack.

Cignal were still without Olympian Import Lynda Morales. Laure Schaudt, the HD Spikers’ other import, contributed seven points.

Army kept hold of fourth in the rankings with a 3-4 record. Cignal remained at fifth at 1-5.

On Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre, Army will faces league leaders Foton Tornadoes (6-0) while Cignal faces second placers Petron (6-1) on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
