Rexona-Sesc bops Bangkok Glass to play for fifth

Brazilian club team Rexona-Sesc Rio made short work of Thailand’s Bangkok Glass 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 to gain a shot at fifth place in the 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championships at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The Brazilians used their height advantage to the hilt, gaining the lead early in each of the sets. Three straight blocks highlighted a 5-0 run that gave Rexona the lead permanently in the first set, 19-13. Bangkok coughed up errors to boost the South Americans to a 19-12 lead in the second frame. Rexona then wasted no time in the third frame, closing the match after going up 20-10.

“It’s very important for us to finish in fifth place. We need to experience playing more in this type of competition so it will helps us more in our matches moving forward,” said Rexona’s young winger Gabi Guimaraes.

Gabi tallied seven points while Monique Marinho added 13 markers to lead the Brazilians. Rexona lorded it over Bangkok Glass at the net, notching nine blocks to Bangkok’s two.

Bangkok’s 33-year old veteran Wilavan Apinyapong again led her squad with 10 points while Vietnamese middle hitter Ngoc Hoa Nguyen added eight.

Rexona will play the winner of the PSL-Hisamitsu clash tomorrow afternoon. Bangkok will face the loser in the battle for seventh.
