Lady Tams trample Lady Red Spikers, advance to next stage

The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws started slow but eventually breezed to their second win in Group B of the Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference, ousting the San Beda College Lady Red Spikers 23-25, 25-6, 25-11, 25-14 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

FEU’s win sealed the three teams that are going to move on to the next elimination phase. The Lady Tams, UP, and UST are all 2-0 with San Beda and CSB at 0-3.

Third year opposite hitter Toni Basas scorched San Beda with 19 points. Bernadeth Pons and Remy Palma added 14 and 13 markers, respectively.

San Beda ambushed the Lady Tamaraws in the first set, taking a 13-5 lead behind the serving of guest player Janine Marciano. Needing two timeouts to halt San Beda’s momentum, FEU slowly crawled back into the match, eventually getting to within one 23-24 after a Bernadeth Pons smash. San Beda, however, managed to close the set thanks to a Chesca Raqraquin smash.

“Talagang nag-slow start pero sabi namin pagdating ng second set dapat mailabas namin ‘yung naeensayo namin,” said FEU head coach Shaq Delos Santos. “Siguro na-execute lang talaa namin ng maayos ‘yung mga ine-ensayo namin.”

The Lady Tams showed their true form in the next three sets. Attacking and serving dynamically, FEU rushed to a 19-2 lead in the second set, 20-10 in the third, and 10-2 in the fourth and final frame to quickly end the match.

With their upcoming matches coming against UAAP rivals, Delos Santos stressed the importance of their last two remaining elimination round matches.

“Siyempre hindi lang siya sukatan para sa amin, ayaw din naming makabawi sila sa amin,” Delos Santos remarked as neither UP nor UST defeated FEU in the UAAP season.

FEU takes on the Tigresses on August 17, 6:00 pm at the PhilSports Arena then the Lady Maroons on August 20, 4:00 pm at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Marciano led her alma mater with eight points while Chesca Raqraquin added five points.

San Beda targets their first win against CSB on August 13, 4 pm at the PhilSports Arena.
