La Salle gets back at Ateneo, ends Lady Eagles’ streak

Revenge comes quick. The De La Salle University Lady Archers opened the second round of tennis action by taking three sets out of five against the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles, just twenty-fours after their last meeting, Sunday morning at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Marinel Rudas opened the day on a high note for La Salle, beating Ateneo rookie Rocio Climent in just two sets, 6-0 and 6-2. The adjacent lawn however held a different story. Jana Pages of Ateneo was able to hold her own against La Sallian Anne Castillo, 6-2 and 6-3.

It was in the doubles matches that the tides turned in favor of the Green side. Jenni Dizon and Khyshana Hitosis won a hardfought two straight sets in the first doubles encounter, going 7-5 and 6-4 against Ateneo’s Shannin Olivarez and Jana Hernandez. The second doubles matchup saw only more glory for the girls in Green. Lady Archers Ana Atangan and Jed Aquino prevailed in a hardfought 7-6 first set against Lady Eagles Jana Exconde and Alexis Mclean. The second set was a different story, as the duo from Taft would go on to seal a quick six straight points to pack up the match.

Khrizelle Sampaton however gave the Ateneo side a little something to cheer, winning two straight sets of her own against La Salle’s Nikki Arandia, 6-1 and 6-1 in the final singles matchup of the day.

The day’s victory evens out the season series between Ateneo and La Salle, the former of whom won its second straight victory at the expense of the latter just the previous day. Both sit at the 2-3 slate as the second round of women’s lawn tennis opens.
