Batang Gilas runs over Thailand to win SEABA gold


Five players finished in double-digits for Batang Gilas as the Philippines U18 national team dominated Thailand, 86-49 to claim the 2016 SEABA U18 Championship gold medal Thursday in Medan, Indonesia.

It was the fifth straight title for the nationals in the tournament, and the eighth overall since the tournament’s inception.

Joshua Sinclair scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the squad, while Gian Mamuyac added 14 points including 8-for-9 from the free throw line.

Thailand managed to take a 19-17 lead after the first quarter, and even went on a 7-0 run to open the second quarter to make it 26-17, before the Philippines responded by outscoring them 31-6 to end the half.

John Bryle Bahio’s triple gave Batang Gilas a 31-28 lead, before Jonas Tibayan and Gian Mamuyac took turns in extending the margin for the squad.

The Philippines entered the halftime break ahead, 48-32, then used a 25-7 third quarter to seal the win.

Bahio, Tibayan, and Evan Nelle combined for 34 points.

The Philippines attacked Thailand inside the paint this time, scoring a 50-26 advantage in points in the paint. The team also had a 55-36 edge in rebounding, scoring nine more second chance points than Thailand.

Batang Gilas will compete in the FIBA Asia U18 Championship later this year.

Philippines (86) – Sinclair 15, Mamuyac 14, Bahio 12, Tibayan 11, Nelle 11, Yu 9, Mendoza 8, Gozum 4, Flores 2.

Thailand (49) – Tabtim 14, Suwan 7, Jiamsawad 6, Sonsem 6, Leelaphipatkul 6, Limjittakom 6, Banchathon 2, Tanrattana 2.
