Phoenix arrested a three-game losing streak with a 9-8 overtime win over Star, Friday, in the PBA-Tag Heuer 3-on-3 women’s basketball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
After Joan Diego scored two straight to tie the count at 4-all, Katherine Merilo made a two-pointer to push Star ahead, 6-4. Diego made a two of her own, but Roscelle Teotico scored inside to make it 7-6 for the Hotshots.
Jacquelyn Suarez, however, made a foul shot with 13.6 seconds left to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Suarez and Alyssa Vega hit the free throws that sealed the win for the Fuel Masters.
Phoenix improved to 1-3 with the win, while Star remained winless at 0-2 in Group A.
In Group B action, Globalport rode on a stellar play of Julie Pearl Gula to book a 10-6 win over Meralco.
Globalport started the game taking a 4-1 lead through twos by Gula and Nelia Sinsioco.
Baskets by Carmela Baarde and Janice Abesamis knotted the count at 4 apiece, but Gula scored five of the next six Globalport points to lead her team to victory.
The Batang Pier improved to third place in the group with a 2-1 record while the Bolts sank to 1-3.
