Filipino bantamweight Marlon Tapales made quick work of Shohei Omori of Japan to earn a title shot for the WBO world bantamweight title at the Shimazu Arena, Kyoto, Japan earlier today.
After knocking down the taller Omori thrice in the first round, the 5-foot-4 “Maranding Nightmare” unleashed a stunning right hook after evading the Japanese’s attempt of a 1-2 punch combination. Omori was able to stand up after the blow but referee Lou Moret decided to save the him from further damage, officially ending the bout at 1:35 seconds of the second round.
With the win, Tapales notches his seventh straight win after dropping a majority decision loss to Mexican David Sanchez for the interim WBC silver superflyweight title and his twenty-eight overall in his seven-year career as a pro.
More importantly, he earns the right to face the winner of Jetro Pabustan and current titleholder Pungluang Sor Singyu in Loei, Thailand this January.
On the other hand, Omori suffers his first defeat of his career as a pro after racking up fifteen straight dating back 2011.
