Defending champions Emilio Aguinaldo College shook off the challenge of San Beda College to open their title defense, while University of Perpetual Help System DALTA upended San Sebastian College in straight sets to get the early lead in the standings, Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Arena, San Juan City.
In the first game, last year’s semifinalist Arellano University defeated Colegio de San Juan de Letran in five sets, 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-12, to register their first win of the season. Kenneth Aliyacyac led the Chiefs with 27 points, 23 coming off attacks. Lawrence Del Esperito scored 15 points to support Aliyacyac’s production. Knights Team Captain Harold Reyes spearheaded his team with 16 points, while Bobby Gatdula had 14 markers.

After five close sets, reigning Most Valuable Player Howard Mojica and his troop jumpstarted their title-retention bid with a win over the Red Lions. The Generals took the match, 21-25 25-21 25-20 23-25 15-10. Mojica led the defending champions with 31 points off 21 attacks and 5 service aces. Kerth Melliza provided ample support with 18 points. San Beda’s skipper Alfie Mascariñas and Mark Enciso paced their herd with 15 and 11 markers respectively.

The Las Piñas-based squad won 25-19, 25-20, 25-19. JR Taneo and Manuel Doliente led the well-balanced offense of the Altas with 7 points each, while skipper Bonjomar Castel and John Ramo both finished with 6. Richard Tolentino was the lone Stag in double-digits with 13, with Team Captain Elino Lazaro producing 9.

In the fourth match, Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals bucked an opening set loss to subdue the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 16-25, 25-19, 25-9, 25-21, to get their first win. Philip Bagalay led the flight of the Cardinals with 20 points from all three scoring skills. Paul Cuzon led the supporting cast with 11 markers. Joeward Fresnede steered the Pirates with 14 markers, off 13 attacks and 1 block.

In the curtain-raiser of NCAA volleyball’s opening salvo, last year’s runners-up College of Saint Benilde Blazers outlasted the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in five exciting sets, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10. National team stalwart and Blazers Team Captain John Vic De Guzman led his squad with 19 points. Outside hitters Isaiah Arda and Racmade Etrone followed with 15 and 12 markers respectively. PJ Sulivas paced the Heavy Bombers after detonating 18 points. Joshua Manzanas and Roden Pulongbarit were not far behind with 14 and 11 markers respectively.
