Assessment
The dreaded Pumaren-press lives on in the University of the East Red Warriors. However, with the majority of their seniors leaving the team, is the house of warriors in chaos?
The House of Chaos is what scribes call the Aldin Ayo-mentored Letran Knights squad that is currently surprising teams in the NCAA. Ayo employs a full-court trapping defense that has baffled the entire league. In that defensive scheme, the Knights, even in being undersized, utilize a plethora of utility guys to disrupt transition points and use all five guys on the court during box out situations.
Now, the Red Warriors must display the same discipline the Knights show day-in and day-out to survive this season’s tournament; especially in having the first family of full court defense, the Pumarens, as your coaches.
Currently, the Red Warriors are one of the smallest teams in the league. They were supposed to line-up Nigerian student-athlete Bertrand Awana this year, but did not do so. RR de Leon and Chris Javier must replicate the production guys like Felix Apreku and Kevin Racal on defense. De Leon and Javier must work hand-in-hand in box out situations, while switching well when the opponent employs a simple pick-and-roll in order for them to succeed.
On offense, third year sniper, Paul Varilla, has a tough task at hand as he will be called upon to lead the team in scoring. Varilla was deadly all throughout the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup tournament, as he developed an off-the-dribble jumpshot. He averaged 8.3 PPG, 32% 3FG%, and 5.4 RPG during the tournament. Fourth year Shooting Guard Jordan Sta. Ana must compliment Varilla in the scoring department as well.
With Dan Alberto being declared ineligible and Roi Sumang foregoing his final year, the biggest hole in the Warriors lineup will be at the one position. Edgar Charcos can space the floor well for the team, but only in stretches, while former NU Bullpup, Philip Manalang, is still raw to lead a team.
40 minutes of up and down basketball is what Coach Derrick Pumaren, but it will be 14 long games for the UE faithful as it is hard to pencil them in as a contender even for the last Final Four spot.
Best case: 6-8
Worst case: 2-12
