Former world title challenger Bernanbe Concepcion capped of the main event of “Mandirigmang Pinoy”, winning the vacant WBO Oriental Super Bantamweight title at the expense of Juma Fundi of Tanzania at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City, Friday night.
Concepcion, who is trying to make his return to the world stage, stopped Fundi at the 56 second mark of the second round with a counter hook.
It was Abe’s fourth win in his last five fights since his TKO loss against Mikey Garcia in Puerto Rico, where he also fought Eden Sonsona to a draw a year ago. His record now stands at 34 wins, 6 loses, 2 draws with 20 knockouts.
The fans in attendance were not disappointed with the action-packed feature fights.
Renerio Arizala emerged victorious over Romnick Magos in their flyweight affair after Magos came out swinging from the opening round. Arizala dropped the Negros Oriental native with a right hook in the second round, but was able to stand up at the eight count.
In the fifth round, however, an unintentional headbutt caused a huge cut in Magos’ forehead that forced the fight to be stopped and be decided via scorecards with 47-45, 47-45 and 47-46, all in Arizala’s favor.
Rogelio Jun Doliguez and Jerry Nardo put on a show in an exciting bout as the unheralded Nardo stood his ground against the former WBO Oriental Featherweight champion. But it wasn’t enough for the 23-year old as Doliguez landed more punches and was hailed victorious after ten rounds, with an identical tally of 96-94.
In the rematch between Philip Luis Cuerdo and Toto Landero, both men fought tooth-and-nail from start to finish in their minimumweight bout. Landero escaped with a split decision win after being deducted a point for a low blow in round number two.
Renren Tesorio retained his Philippine Games and Amusement Board Light-Flyweight belt in an anticlimactic fashion when the ringside doctor deemed Bonjun Loperez unfit to continue after sustaining a deep cut on his left eyelid in one of their exchanges. He won the fight via technical unanimous decision.
Ryan Bajala got the upset of the night by putting a halt on Nino Valenzuela’s undefeated streak. The Aljoe Jaro stable fighter, who entered the fight as a huge underdog with an even 3-3 win-loss record, landed a flurry of punches in the second canto before the referee saved a visibly groggy Valenzuela from further punishment.
