University of Santo Tomas Tiger Jins pounce on Far Eastern Tamaraws to cement taekwondo dominance
The season 75 UAAP Taekwondo Champions, UST – Black, displayed a masterful performance in the 38th Annual Taekwondo Nationals championship series with a 3-2 series win over FEU-Green.
University of Santo Tomas started off strong behind Royel Ramirez dominant 16-9 win over Karlo Careres. The next match saw FEU bounce back with Eric Garces’ come from behind win over Rhayzor Catris 7-4. Down 2-1 after the first round, Garces churned in a huge rally in the second round and scored 5 points to win the match.
With the series at 1-1, the Tiger Jins secured the next two matches with dominant wins by Joaquin Mendoza and Juan Ramos, both shutting down their opponents, to clinch the gold medal for UST. The combined aggregate score of the dominant performances of both Mendoza and Ramos totaled 13 points with Ariel Bacud and Clint Ferrer failing to register a point. In a non-bearing final match for the series, burly FEU Jin Paul Ivan Norombaba beat Aries Capispisan 4-2.
The dominant run by the UST Tiger Jins show that they are ready to return as taekwondo kings in the upcoming UAAP season. FEU would want to avenge this loss in the upcoming UAAP season with Ivan Norombaba leading the charge for the Tamaraws.
Arellano University sweeps UAAP Season 77 hosts University of the East to take home bronze
Arellano University wins the bronze medal of the 38th Annual Taekwondo Nationals with a 3-match sweep over the University of the East. Matthew Padilla, Indanan and Rasad Wasben dominated their UE counterparts with scores of 12-6, 12-6 and 14-7 respectively in their matches. (Aggregate score: 38-19)
The Arellano University will compete in the 90th Season of the NCAA’s Taekwondo Tournament while the University of the East look to upset defending champions UST Tiger Jins in the 77th Season of the UAAP.
Rules of the tournament:
Teams/Clubs are composed of 5 jins from different weight divisions
Teams/Clubs win a series with 3 wins out of 5 matches
2 rounds of 90 seconds per match
Point System:
1 point is scored with a solid body kick
2 points is scored with a solid turning body kick
3 points is scored with a solid head kick
4 points is scored with a solid turning head kick
1 point is scored with a solid punch to the body
8 seconds is given for a fallen jin. If the jin cannot continue, the opposing jin wins via knockout
Disqualification:
A kyong-go (warning) is given with a certain foul. 2 kyong-go’s would result to a point deduction.
A gam-jun (deduction) is given when a jin commits a heavy foul. A gam-jun would result to a point deduction.
If a jin accumulates 4 total point deductions, the jin is disqualified.
*In case of a tie after two rounds, a golden round of 2 minutes occurs with the first jin scoring winning the match.
** In case no one scores in the golden round, the jury decides the victor via superiority. Superiority is based on aggressiveness and court control.
