University of Santo Tomas finally broke its silence with regards to the signing of Aldin Ayo as the next head coach of the Growling Tigers.

In a statement released by the school through its Institute of Physical Education and Athletics, it opened by looking back on the tournament that was that saw the Growling Tigers finish last for the first-time in school-history with a 1-13 record.

“At the conclusion of the first half of UAAP Season 80, the University of Santo Tomas community expresses gratitude for another year of memorable collegiate basketball, recognizing that each season always offers opportunities not only to celebrate victories, but also to learn and grow from losses no matter how heartbreaking they could be,” the statement read.

“As the university moves forward in preparation for the next season, the Thomasian community welcomes the new head coach of the UST Growling Tigers, Coach Aldin Ayo.”

The institution knew full well that Ayo’s contract with La Salle did not bind him beyond December, 2017. With Ayo’s resignation from the Green Archers last December 26, the Growling Tigers’ management, headed by team booster FMR Corporation, decided to get in talks with the fiery mentor.

According to the statement, there are two reasons why the school chose Ayo.

Firstly, Ayo preaches to his athletes to finish their studies even if they had exhausted their years of eligibility in the UAAP.

“The basketball program that he espouses is based on discipline that gives primary importance to the academic life of the student-athletes, believing that athletes who are hardworking in their studies are likewise those who are able to handle themselves properly both on and off the court.

“This is the same ideal that UST has constantly advocated since the inception of its athletic program,” the statement furthered.

Moreover, Ayo’s resume speaks for itself.

In his first three years in the major leagues of Philippine Collegiate basketball, he has won an NCAA championship and a UAAP crown while compiling an impressive .826 winning percentage in the elimination round.

“Coach Ayo is a well-accomplished coach who is likewise more than willing to accomodate the university’s modest salary scheme, thus demonstrating his desire to provide guidance to his players in this educative process outweighs all else.”

Excited with what lies ahead, UST is hoping that the community remains one during this time of transition.

“We look forward with much hope and gratitude as we remain one with the entire UST community and alumni in our commitment to the formation of well-rounded Thomasian student-athletes through excellent sports program,” the statement closed.
