With the loss of Aira Villegas against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam in the flyweight division, Day Four of the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships saw the last of the Philippine boxers out of the tournament.
“Maganda po ang ipinakita niyang laro, sayang nga lang at natalo po siya [at] parang nahirapan po siya sa mahabang kamay ng kalaban,” said national team head coach Roel Velasco.
This was the comment of the national team head coach Roel Velasco on the performance of the 22 year-old Aira Villegas in yesterday’s quarterfinals of the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
Villegas was up against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam in the flyweight division — a bout Villegas lost via unanimous decision. Her loss means that the last of the Philippine boxers are out of the regional tournament.
The Asian Women’s Boxing Championship runs from November 2 to 12.
Apart from Villegas, Team Philippines was composed of Judelyn Casin in the flyweight division (48 kg) and Nesthy Petecio, a silver medalist in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2014, in the featherweight division (60 kg).
According to the team’s head coach, the women’s boxing team will now turn their attentions to their youth boxers who are scheduled to compete from November 19 to 26 in the World Youth Women’s Boxing Championships in India.
