A new era will dawn for the PBA when it enters its 43rd season
In a special meeting held at the PBA office in Libis, seven of the PBA’s 12 governors have come into a quorum, agreeing that they would no longer extend Chito Narvasa’s term as league commissioner.
Narvasa served as league commissioner for three years.
And it was no longer about the trade that sent the first overall pick in the 2017 PBA Rookie Draft from the Kia Picanto to the San Miguel Beermen according to incoming PBA chairman Ramoncito Fernandez of NLEX.
“It’s not the trade issue anymore,” said Fernandez, “It’s simply about loss of confidence.”
The seven governors that voted “no” to the extension are the governors of NLEX, TNT Katropa, Meralco Bolts, Alaska Aces, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Blackwater Elite, and Phoenix Fuel Masters.
After the trade, the representatives from the seven franchises have released statements, saying that Narvasa’s approval of the trade brought the league into a negative light from the fans. Moreover, in a statement by TNT management last Sunday, the group said that Narvasas has also lost the trust given to him by the board.
Not in attendance for the special meeting were representatives from San Miguel, Kia, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Star Hotshots, and Globalport Batang Pier.
Deputy commissioner Rickie Santos will take over as the officer-in-charge until two-thirds of the board will come into an agreement on who the next commissioner will be.
