UPMBT supports Gomez de Liano bros decision to focus on Gilas

University of the Philippines has expressed its full support for the decision of brothers Javi and Juan Gomez de Liaño to sit out UAAP Season 83 to focus on their journey in Gilas Pilipinas.

For the brass of the squad, there’s no greater calling than to serve the country.

“UP is after all, all about serving the country and giving its best in service of the people,” the statement read.

“The GDL brothers represent the best of the UP Basketball Program and we support their desire to serve our country by playing for the national team.”

Early this week, Juan and Javi shared their intention to not join the team this year.

Juan, who was supposed to be in his fourth year, averaged 8.0 points, 5.38 rebounds, and 2.31 assists per contest. Meanwhile, Javi, who is entering his fifth year, posted norms of 10.5 points per game.

The two are not closing their doors on a return next season.

Still, the Fighting Maroons stressed that the brothers will still be members of the team, although they will be absent from the roster.

“Still, they remain a part of the UPMBT. We are beyond grateful for their contributions to the uprising of the program in recent years. Most importantly, the team is proud that they will represent UP in our endeavor to win glory for the country through basketball.”
