Juan Gomez de Liaño to sit out UAAP Season 83

After months of pondering, Juan Gomez de Liaño has made the tough decision to sit out his senior year with University of the Philippines.

The 6-foot-1 combo guard shared his decision Thursday evening, during Mighty Sports’ victory celebration at Milky Way Building in Makati.

Just how tough was his decision? Well, he consulted with his family for a long time before making it.

“I’ve talked to my family, people I’m close with. I’ve decided to sit out this coming season as well,” said the 20-year-old.

This comes in the wake of his older brother Javi’s decision to also sit out Season 83.

Just like Javi, Juan shared that he wants to focus more on Gilas Pilipinas’ campaign in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers. The two brothers are part of the pool.

“More time to focus on Gilas. As what I’ve said, it’s a no-brainer. Not everyone has the opportunity to represent and play for Gilas. I’m really gonna take advantage of this,” he said.

“I feel like it’s a great start to help me and my basketball career and I’m just really grateful for the opportunity.”

Juan has been the steady rock in the Fighting Maroons’ rise during the last three years. In Season 82, Juan — who had been dealing with injuries — posted norms of 8.0 points, 5.38 rebounds, and 2.31 assists per contest.

Juan is not closing his doors on a possible return to Season 84 where he, Javi, and younger brother Jordi will have a chance to play together.

“I’m not closing my doors for Season 84, but as of right now, I’m really focused on Gilas. I wanna represent the country again. It’s truly an honor to represent the country.”
