De La Salle University continued its UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament second round hot streak to four games, clipping University of the East, 25-12, 25-19, 25-22, Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Thea Gagate and Leiah Malaluan led the way for the Lady Spikers with 12 points apiece with the former tallying three blocks.
A 3-1 spurt in the third set, capped by Leila Cruz’s off-the-block hit, finished the match for the Lady Spikers.
“So far we got a straight sets win for this pero lumaban talaga, nagpakita ng depensa ‘yung UE,” said DLSU assistant coach Benson Bocboc. “Hindi talaga bumigay, medyo humaba ‘yung mga rallies pero so far, nagiging successful naman ‘yung blockings namin.”
The Lady Spikers banked on a strong 16-6 start in the second set to ultimately take the frame, 25-19.
DLSU opened the game in dominant fashion, 25-12, before UE made efforts in the next salvos to close the gap.
“May mga adjustments pa tayo heading into the next game. At least nakita namin ngayon ano pa ‘yung mga kulang,” Bocboc said.
Fifi Sharma did some damage at the net as well for the Lady Spikers with two blocks to go with six spikes for eight points.
Meanwhile, Matet Espina made her mark at the service line with two aces to end with eight points too. Cruz also registered the same tally.
DLSU held on to the second spot at 9-3, a game ahead of third seed University of Santo Tomas at 8-4.
Dara Nieva paced UE with 12 points while Rhea Manalo chipped in 10 points. Ja Lana had an off game with just five points.
The Lady Warriors stayed luckless in 12 matches.
The Lady Spikers look to make it five in a row on Tuesday against archrival Ateneo de Manila University at 4 pm. UE aims for its first win at 10 am against the Golden Tigresses.
